The Farm, is in the south east of England, and was 10 years ago purely an apple farm growing about 20 varieties of apples. Since then and with market forces, almost half the 60 acres, have been grubbed out and turned over to pasture. As mowing is costly, it made sense to get something else to keep the grass down.
To that end, a number of steers were got from market and this this has kept the grass down, so in summer there are up to about 15 steers on the farm and over winter about 9, except where the hay is growing to feed those that stay over the winter. There are 2 sets on the farm, the new ones which were got this year, and those that stayed over winter and are the older ones. To stop the newer ones from catching stuff that the older are immune to, they are kept apart.
This year sheep were got to follow the steers, as the grass likes to be eaten really short. At the moment there are 6. Here you can select photos of the farm from April 2005, I will put pictures month by month, so that you can see what is going on.
